GLO#3:COMPLEX THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING
A'OLE MOANALUA PROJECT:
Dear Department of Education,
We are 4 students from Moanalua High School and want to talk about longer school days. Regarding the bill SB 2922, there are some changes we would like to propose. First off we would like you to reconsider making the school days longer. Many students are having trouble getting a healthy amount of sleep at night, longer school days meaning less time to finish homework. Even student-athletes are up late almost every night trying to finish homework and projects. Also since school days are longer, when sports have games or events during school they miss much more school. This gives the student-athletes more stress after a long day. Our suggestion is to allow schools to go back to the old schedules. Students were only required to take six classes and received homework for these six classes. Extending the school days had added another class to students schedules which also includes more homework after the even longer school days. This is causing majority of the students to start to lose many hours of sleep and come to school tired more often. If we revert back to the old schedules students will be able to complete all the work that needs to be done and come to school well rested. Sincerly, Tyler Trim, Malina Kato, Lennon Sullivan, & Emree Sato |
A'ole moanalua was a project we did to protest against something we wanted to change around the school. I protested against our long school hours and that we should shorten it. We needed to have good reasoning about why they'd consider this. We used complex thinking and problem solving to persuade the department of eduction that long school hours can cause students to have less time to do homework, have trouble sleeping, and have a hard time balancing school and sports.
